What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a plastic surgery to increase breast size of women. It involves placing breast implants under breast tissue or chest muscles.

Breast augmentation restores breast volume lost to achieve a more rounded breast shape or improve natural breast size asymmetry.

Breasts come in all shapes and sizes and congenital problems, weight changes, pregnancy or  breastfeeding can affect the size and shape of the breasts, and whatever the reason, breast augmentation can restore confidence and self-esteem and have a very positive impact on the life of the patient.

The pinnacle of modern breast augmentation: permanent implants that feel like real breast tissue

How is a Breast Augmentation performed?

There are two different methods by which breast augmentation can be performed.  The first is to use the patient’s own fat to add volume and natural shape. The second, more popular option is to use soft, natural-feeling implants for the same purpose. The range of implants available today is much broader than in years past, and modern silicone implants are extremely soft and durable, enabling an entirely natural-looking result.

During the procedure, which is performed under general anaesthesia, Mr Tiryaki will inject a local anaesthetic to reduce bleeding and postoperative pain and then make a small incision at the inframammary fold, at the bottom of the breast. After preparing an appropriate pocket, the implants will be placed within. Once the desired shape and size is achieved, the skin will be closed with absorbable sutures. The scars remain hidden within the inframammary fold.

How are the implants selected for the surgery?

Important factors in choosing the appropriate implants include the age, height, and physical features of the patient, the shape of the rib cage, and the shape and size of the breast. During the consultation process, Mr Tiryaki will discuss the type of implant required for the best outcome.  With the use of 3D imaging technology, the patient can see what the best options are and how the breasts will look post-surgery.  It is important to note that the placement of the implant and the type of implant used can alter the outcome, so the consultation process is extremely important.

The new generation of implants, known as Life Time implants, are very resistant to pressure and impact. Neither time nor other factors such as pregnancy should cause a need for replacement.

Mr Tiryaki uses two different types of Life Time implants. One of them is round and the other is a drop-shaped implant. Rounded silicones make the upper breast look fuller, whereas drop-shaped silicones lift the breast more from below and create very natural-looking results. Life Time implants are designed to be almost the same consistency as the breast tissue so that they move easily with the body and feel natural to the touch.

How long is the recovery time for a Breast Augmentation?

The recovery period is approximately one week. A sport or support bra should be worn for three weeks following surgery.

Guidelines for Surgery

The following guidelines apply for all types of surgery;

  • You should stop using all kinds of blood thinners.
  • You should stop smoking within two weeks following the operation. You should not do any activities that will increase blood pressure.
  • Before the surgery you should have a breast USG or mammography which are no more than 3 months.
  • You can usually go home the same day.
  • This operation is performed under general anaesthesia.
  • Implants are permanent, you do not have to change your implants over time. And also, implants do not pose a problem for breastfeeding.
  • You may have some pain, however, you can use simple painkillers. Any discomfort will disappear within a few years.
  • You can take shower two or three days after the operation.
  • You may have some bruising and oedema in the operational area.
  • You should wear a support or sport bra for at least three weeks after the operation. Mr Tiryaki will advise the most suitable one for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

As with all surgical procedures, patients must abstain from taking blood thinners and limit both alcohol consumption and smoking as much as possible. Ideally, a patient should abstain entirely from smoking and drinking alcohol in the last couple of days preceding surgery. We recommend that all patients have a breast ultrasound or mammogram less than three months before a breast lift operation. If you are planning to have implants, you should also familiarise yourself with the associated risks, which include the possibility of capsular contracture or, in extremely rare cases, a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma called ALCL.

The procedure takes from 60 to 90 minutes and is performed under general anaesthesia. Patients can usually return home the same day.

There is no need for an overnight stay in the hospital. You may shower two to three days after the operation. Patients can usually return to work after three or four days, and can return completely to normal life after a week. We recommend wearing support or sport bras for three weeks following a breast lift. Mr Tiryaki will suggest the most suitable option. The sutures will dissolve on their own and do not need to be removed. As with all surgical procedures, you should stop smoking for the duration of the two weeks following the operation, and you should not participate in any activities that will increase blood pressure.

Mr Tiryaki prefers to use Life Time dual plane silicones, which are resistant to wear, tear, and deformation, and can therefore last for life.

Breast augmentation surgery will not prevent breastfeeding. The procedure is performed without coming into contact with the milk glands or ducts.
